How do you find out which car insurance companies are better

I want to find the best car insurance company and am having trouble learning about what other people think. Most people go for best price, but I want to know who is, and isn't, going to help me if I have anaccident.

Knight,
That's a nice advertisment you've posted. However I'm not sure I understand how you missed that the OP is not looking for the best price, but rather for the best company.

Does the web site you're plugging do anything to help someone who's primary concern is quality claims service?

Fishman,

Thanks for your reply, I understand that you maybe looking only in terms of strong coverage and a company you can depend on. I found that as well which ultimately pushes me to share... I was able to save money, the free shopping service was great, and I chose Travelers which now covers my home and auto.

Now that is a dependable company.

Thanks...

Dr_Meyler...you will find many people on this post giving some great advice but then you will find others that are simply touting the aspects of the companies they sell to push their own goods. You can look at me doing the same but fortunately I work for a company that is paying me for my time and not as much what I sell.

If I were looking for auto insurance I would be looking for a couple things...
1. The type of agent...are they knowledgeable on the services they are providing, benefits of each company they have to offer and how do you personally feel about the agent.
2. Seek google for consumer report information on the companies you might be with, to look for any complaints, paises or even just comments.
3. Most companies will give praise to their claims department and dependant upon the the adjuster in the area it can change so the only way you will find this out is if you have a claim...like your agent will tell you...Please try to avoid that. :)
4. Price is an issue with everyone it this day and age...my option would be to see different agents from different companies and shop for the best price. Some are typically better than others and if price is a major factor in your decision then it shouldn't be that difficult.

My main point in this rant is that you are unfortunately going to have to do the research yourself because I could tell you my company is the best but then you go see someone else and they'll say the same. Do the research and make up your own mind. If you are not happy down the road with your decision you can always change again.

As an independent agent, if a company handled several claims poorly I would certainly let the rep know, and would certainly take that into consideration for future business that gets placed. A company that handles claims badly reflects on me and could hurt my retention.

But you have to balance that information with giving the client the best price possible with the best company possible. As agent's we have to do the best we can for our client.
