May be not. The insurance company will ask this question when the loss amount is negligible. Everytime you file a claim that gets counted on your next renewal. And if you are quite frequent in filing claims then the insurer may hike your rates abnormally, he may even deny to cover you anymore. Your claiming history will show up on your CLUE report, which the quite easily accessible by the insurers. If so then you may face difficulty in getting a policy in future as well.
Hope that clarifies.

Well, they may sound same, but there is a thin line of difference between them. Filing claim depicts that you want to collect compensation for your loss under the policy, whereas, reporting implies.....mere intimation of the incident. As we don't know the kind of accident you were involved in, its difficult to give more specific answer to you. Let me put an example before you.
If you were involved in a two car accident where the other party was at-fault, you may like to inform your insurer about it......this is reporting. Now, if you want to get paid for your damages under the policy......that's termed as filing claim.

I'm betting you called your agent (?) if so they are wanting to know if you indeed do want to pursue a claim...they will then notify the claims dept and proceed with your claim. More than likley a 'report' is just that, and goes no further than the agents office...(no claim is filed)...
