My 85 year old mother missed a car insurance payment and the policy lapsed at midnight the day before she had a minor fender bender.
The insurance company reinstated her policy but would not cover the accident. any recourse...? She had never sumited a claim with the company all the years she had the policy..

Well ... you could go the customer service angle all these companies are paying such high attention to.

You could call the company and go up the ladder, see if you can get a supervisor's sympathetic ear or a manager that might make an exception ...

or

Write a lengthy detailed letter explaining the lapse, why it occurred, the action taken to reinstate, etc. and see if they will make an exception due to the long history of being a good paying customer. I assume she has not let it lapse before or has a history of poor payment?

Maybe, fingers crossed, you might get somewhere. Otherwise this is a tough one. Good luck.

Yes, you could avail some benefits only if the auto insurance carrier is good under such cases. Normally, it seems there is a specific period of time within which you'd need to file a claim, failing which you may not be entitled to receive anything!
Best of luck from my side!

Hi there!

I truly feel sorry hearing about your grandma!
Thats why probably it is so important to keep the payments up in order to cope up with the hassles related with age.

The insurance company reinstated her policy but would not cover the accident.

It would help us if you would provide us info as to how the discussion followed with her adjusters. Do you think they issued her a new policy with a higher premium after the lapse!

Timing is everything...this midnight was this ten days after the policy was due? or was this one day after the policy period? this is very important...if it was the tenth day. (at midnight) then she will likely have zero chance...if however, lets say her policy period was jan1-june1, and she paid the premium june2, she should be ok..if she paid it june 11th, not so much....please explain the time line a little better.

unfortunately no prior claims etc...can't make much difference...you can check your states dept of insurance website, they should have all the information re: your states laws regarding the time lines for premium acceptance...Please answer this question and we'll see if we can be of further assistance...

(poor mom, I feel so bad for her...hope the sweet thing isn't stressing too much about it)... :(
