I don't see where your profession makes any difference. The fact is that human beings get sick. Human beings get hurt. My assumption is that you are human and therefore, having the means to pay for the potential medical bills is important. Not having the means could have a devastating impact on your future.

Health insurance is definitely a must. If you don't have health insurance, you'll find yourself saying "oh it's just a cold, it will go away with nyquil" when it could be something much worse like pneumonia. Having insurance would enable you to go to a doctor and get antibiotics or some other medicine besides cough syrup. Most doctors charge 70-80 dollars for an office visit with no insurance, and I'm sure there are plenty that don't accept the uninsured patients at all. The best way to get health insurance is through a job, the rates are deeply discounted at that point. If nothing else, just get a free quote to see how much it would cost for you to be insured. There's a link below to get a free quote if you would like to try. If that doesn't pan out, there is always local aid programs that provide discounted if not free medical care for individuals that don't have a lot of income.

When a person suffers from a serious sickness such as cancer, he is not the only one going through the physical and emotional ordeal, his family members too, feel the pain and undergo emotional distress and anxiety.

It is a traumatic event for everybody in the family.

The pain is further compounded if the family is pressed to look for ways to get money to pay hospital bills.

Health insurance can alleviate financial pressure and provide the much needed relief to the family.

Health insurance is not an accessory but a necessity and also a form of responsibility.

I agree with Alston, purchase a High Deductible Health Insurance policy that is affordable. Making monthly payments for Health Insurance should not be a financial burden at your age. Anyone can get hurt or sick and you would be refused appointments at many Doctors offices without a Health Insurance Policy. I suggest you compare deductibles of $2,500, $5,000 and even as high as $10,000. You don't need a Health Plan that wipes your nose.
