I'm an agent located in Houston, Texas. By chance, can anyone recommend an insurance company for home & auto.

I'm sure that all the big companies operate in Texas and apart from that there are several local insurers too who would write business in the line of P&C.
Travelers Property Casualty Corp
Metropolitan Property & Casualty Insurnc
Texas Aga Inc
Phoenix Indemnity Insurance Company

there are plenty of them; but Mr.John T ,will you just accept the
recommendation from this insurance community.No!! you won't rather not
a single person should do that.
Because finally you are going to deal with that
yeh !! you can ask for the list of the different insurance companies but
ultimately you only have to put the bell for that specific "cat" (read
insurance company).
just simple question if i say join 'Phoenix Indemnity Insurance Company'
are you going to do that immediately. i bet you won't? Answer is simple.
