Is anyone familiar with how a defined benefit plan annuity works when the ex-spouse gets 50% when I retire. We were married over 20 yrs and i have worked with the federal govt over 30 yrs. What happens if i get married again?

Spouse over 10 years are eligible to receive 50% of the federal annuity payment. The annuity payment for the spouse will begin the day it’ll begin for the recipient, and will cease with the death of the annuitant. A reduced annuity payment will continue if the spouse is entitled for the former spouse survivor annuity as per the court order.

You may have to check with the human resource department of your office and obtain the information on the process of beneficiary change.

If your former spouse gets remarried before reaching the 60 yrs, she will automatically become ineligible for the benefits. Also, if she remarries after the annuity has commenced, any reduction for that purpose will get discontinued and will become available to the annuitant to transfer to another spouse. You should promptly inform the annuity office regarding such remarriage. The spouse to whom you have been married for last one year will then become eligible for receiving annuity benefits.
