Remaining healthy in the later years is something we’d like to take for granted. However, one of two people eventually needs some kind of long-term health care, whether at home, in an assisted living facility or in a nursing home, according to Karen L. Mauro, a certified financial planner with ARS Financial Services, Inc. in Jericho.

Mauro said long-term insurance is a neglected area, simply because many would rather avoid thinking about aging in general. “People would much sooner buy homeowner’s insurance, even though the chance of a home being destroyed is a lot less than one in two,” she said.

Yeah, we often tend to neglect the issues related to living long and therefore overlook the importance of long-term care. But this can be taken care of by planning early. If you have saved enough in your lifetime you may not need the protection of long-term care insurance, but since most of us don’t save regularly, long term care plans can help us in building the asset that we might need during old ages.

Agreed that qualifying for Medicare has become all more difficult but I’m not too sure with the private long term care as well. How much does it cost? Who can qualify for these plans? When is the best time to start planning?

There's an opt-out clause in both Romneycare and Obamacare. You can opt out for renaoss of religion or conscience, and you don't have to pay the fine. There are lots of Christian Scientists in Massachusetts. But if you do opt-out, you can't opt back in if you get sick the mandatory coverage clause won't apply to you.
