We have a term life ins policy on my husband with will expire in 8 years.Can we extend it for a longer term now?

First let's answer the OP's question:
Probably not going to be able unless he goes through underwriting again.
Now, for the other stuff concerning WL and such.
When you grow up and realise the world isn't about math and rates of return you'll understand that what WL brings to the table is quite substantial. This is one area where experience can be beneficial, hopefully you'll get some soon.
