I bought a car and its currently under my name, but I want to let my father in law borrow the car so he could go to Mexico. I dont know what paper work is required to make this legal. Do I need to sign papers authorizing him to take the car. Is this possible?

In Mexico, an accident is usually a criminal offense that a person can be jailed for. Many carriers do not cover very far into mexico because their laws are so different in regards to accidents than ours are. If they were more like ours, they wouldn't have a problem insuring the their country. Hence why Canada is usually a covered area.

Anyone going to Mexsico, call your agent about Mexico insurance. You're better off than taking any risks. It's generally pretty cheap and it offers the protections you need in Mexico.

You need to have a permit to take the vehicle to mexico. You can drive your vehicle or a vehicle towards the border but maybe within 20 miles there is a check point were you have to stop and show a mexican permit to drive that vehicle further into mexico. So in other words you can take your vehicle to border towns , and most of the time your auto insurance covers there but if your driving deeper into mexico you need to have auto insurance (mexican) and the permit to take that vehicle. The permit you can get it in mexican consulate, or in the border, the vehicle needs to be in your name . If there wasnt this law people could steel cars and take them to mexico!!!!!
